Jinja Safari is two equal halves: harmonizing frontmen & multi-instrumentalists Marcus Azon and Pepa Knight. Marcus grew up in Tasmania, the son of a preacher-man. The son of an artist, Pepa hails from the central coast of New South Wales.
In early 2010, the rhythm and play of their two personalities were revealed, intertwined and born from a debut meeting over a beach campfire beside the semi-tropical jungle of Australia’s eastern coastline. Sharing the same adventurous instincts, their imaginations soared over the Indian Ocean to settle in the East-African township of Jinja.
Honest, exploding with joy and seemingly hiding key elements amongst the sonic foliage – the music of Jinja Safari draws from Afropop rhythms and tumbling island-guitar, woven with transcendent landscapes of melodic layering. Coupled with arching harmonies & sly word-play, the boys forge the stone age-old truth: the music that most brings humans together is dancing-music: organic & alive.
Lyrically, Jinja Safari perfectly captures the space between half-held childhood memories of hide & seek and grasping onto a fleeting youth - scurrying through the forest, discovering young love and breeching adulthood.
The live band is pulled together as a 5-piece of unapologetic & bouncy showmanship. Using a carnival of multiple percussionists and bringing an energy that is drawn from the overarching joy of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, the east/west blend of Graceland-era Paul Simon, and the intimate, fiery indie-scamper of Efterklang.
The first live show for Jinja Safari was held on May 1st 2010 in a secret coastal forest for family & friends, followed by their debut public show supporting Miami Horror & Last Dinosaurs. Jinja Safari embarked upon a tour with Art vs Science in August causing countless limbs to flail in unison across the country.
In early June, Jinja Safari were selected by Triple J Unearthed to open the Splendour In The Grass festival (joining The Pixies, Grizzly Bear, Temper Trap, Florence & The Machine & many more), and their debut single "Peter Pan" was added on high-rotation to the Triple J playlist.
The debut EP for Jinja Safari, featuring songs "Peter Pan", "Forest Eyes" & "Vagabond" is out now on Young Mine Records through Other Tongues distribution.
