Papa vs Pretty was formed in the fifteen year-old mind of Thomas Rawle (vocals/guitars/synths) three years ago, recruiting Gus Gardiner (bass/keys) and Tom Myers (drums/percussion) in early 2008. With the release of their eponymous EP, Papa vs Pretty have established themselves as one of our most intriguing new propositions.
Papa vs Pretty is driven by Thomas, who writes and records all the music in his home studio when he’s not studying for his Year 12 exams. As equally enamoured by Aphex Twin as Elliott Smith, At The Drive-In as Prokofiev and Talking Heads as Prince, the band’s genre-hopping output is flavoured with elements of rock, electronica, jazz, funk and classical music, at times challenging traditional song structures but united by a distinct pop sensibility.
Papa vs Pretty’s magnetic live show has earned them gigs and tours with Phoenix, The Temper Trap, Howling Bells, Malcolm Middleton (Arab Strap), Dappled Cities, British India and Bridezilla, as well as festival slots on Laneway. Peats Ridge and Parklife, all while catching the attention of tastemaking blogs and music press alike.
